A shipping charge correction is the carrier telling you that the parcel you paid for is not the parcel it carried. Sometimes the carrier is right: the box was rounded down, it bulged, or someone picked the wrong carton preset. Sometimes the automated dimensioner caught a strap, a label flap or a box resting at an angle. Without a record from your side, you cannot tell which, and you pay either way.

This guide covers the rules UPS and FedEx bill by, what changes in 2027, how long you have to dispute, and the one photo routine that lets you tell a fair correction from a wrong one before the dispute window closes.

Why carriers correct your charges, and what a reviewer checks

Carriers bill for the larger of actual weight and dimensional weight, and they reserve the right to measure every parcel themselves. UPS's Tariff and Terms of Service (effective April 17, 2026) says UPS may audit any package to verify dimensions or weight, may weigh and measure it "using any method UPS deems appropriate" including multidimensional measuring devices, and may adjust charges based on the result. FedEx's 2026 Service Guide reserves the same right to audit shipment weight and dimensions. DHL Express's terms of carriage say any piece may be re-weighed and re-measured to confirm the higher of actual or volumetric weight.

When you dispute, the billing reviewer compares the figures you entered with the figures the audit recorded. Your evidence has to answer three questions:

  1. What were the real dimensions and weight of this exact parcel?
  2. Were they measured the way the carrier measures? Longest side first, extreme points, rounded up.
  3. Is this record really of this parcel, at dispatch? Order or tracking reference, time, and no sign of editing.

The billing rules behind every correction

UPS and FedEx publish the same basic method with small differences. All figures below were checked in the carriers' 2026 rate guides and terms in October 2026.

Rule UPS FedEx
Dimensional weight formula L × W × H ÷ 139 (daily rates) or ÷ 166 (retail rates) L × W × H ÷ 139
How dimensions are rounded Each measurement up to the next whole inch (1.01 becomes 2) Any fraction of an inch up to the next inch
Bulges and odd shapes Measured at extreme points, including bulges Measured as if enclosed in a rectangular box
Additional Handling (dimension triggers) Longest side over 48 in, second-longest over 30 in, length plus girth over 105 in, or over 10,368 cubic inches Same four triggers; 40 lb minimum billable weight
Additional Handling (weight) Over 50 lb (domestic) Over 50 lb (US package services)
Large Package / Oversize Length plus girth over 130 in, length over 96 in, over 110 lb, or over 17,280 cubic inches; 90 lb minimum billable weight Same triggers for US; 90 lb minimum billable weight
Correction or audit fee Greater of $1.65 per corrected package or 12% of corrections, when the average correction in an invoice week exceeds $1.00 per package Not found in the 2026 Service Guide sections we checked
Dispute window 180 days from receiving the contested invoice, or the dispute is waived 180 days from the original invoice date (US); 60 days (international)

Two lines in the rate guides deserve attention. UPS's guide notes that box manufacturers' stated sizes may not match the exterior dimensions of a packed box, and that improper packaging is more likely to change a package's dimensions in transit. FedEx and UPS both say dimensions can change during transit and that they may adjust charges when they do. In plain terms: a soft, overfilled box that swells on the belt is billed at its swollen size, and your evidence needs to show the box was square and firm when it left.

Why rounding alone creates corrections

Rounding is where a lot of "wrong" corrections turn out to be right. Take a box measured at 18.5 × 12.25 × 10.1 inches. Entered as 18 × 12 × 10, it is 2,160 cubic inches, or 16 lb dimensional weight at the 139 divisor. Rounded the way UPS and FedEx round, it is 19 × 13 × 11, which is 2,717 cubic inches, or 20 lb. The carrier is not wrong; the entry was. A photo with the tape on each side lets you see that in ten seconds and fix the carton preset instead of filing a dispute you will lose.

The same arithmetic matters at surcharge thresholds. A carton that is 48.4 inches long rounds to 49, which is over the 48-inch Additional Handling trigger at both carriers.

What the 2027 rate changes do to every misjudged inch

FedEx's standard list rates rise an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027, and its surcharges change the same day, according to FedEx's rate-change page and its 2027 surcharge and fee table.

FedEx US package surcharge Zone 2 Zones 3–4 Zones 5–6 Zone 7+
Additional Handling, dimension (2026 → 2027) $29.50 → $31.75 $32.75 → $35.25 $38.50 → $41.25 $40.75 → $43.75
Additional Handling, weight (2026 → 2027) $46.00 → $49.50 $50.25 → $54.00 $56.25 → $60.25 $58.75 → $63.00
Additional Handling, packaging (2026 → 2027) $26.50 → $28.50 $30.75 → $33.00 $33.00 → $35.25 $33.75 → $36.25
Oversize Charge (2026 → 2027) $255 → $270 $275 → $290 $320 → $345 $330 → $355

FedEx's Ground Unauthorized Package Charge also rises from $1,875 to $1,975 per package. For UPS, the 2026 Daily Rate and Service Guide lists the dimensional Additional Handling charge at $30.00 to $40.50 per package by zone and the commercial Large Package Surcharge at $219.50 to $286.00; check ups.com for UPS's 2027 changes before you budget.

A correction that moves a parcel across one of these thresholds is no longer a few dollars of dimensional weight. It is a surcharge plus a minimum billable weight, which is why the evidence routine below is worth the seconds it takes.

The evidence routine: tape, scale display and label, before the label prints

The record that settles a dimensional weight dispute is made at the pack station, after the box is sealed and before the label prints. It ties the measured parcel to the order, so when an adjustment arrives weeks later you can find the exact box.

Photos work well for single parcels; a short continuous video is better for multi-carton shipments because it shows each carton being measured and labelled in sequence. Either way, the record must be bound to the order at the time, not renamed later. Our packing video evidence checklist covers what makes a record hold up.

How to dispute a dimensional weight adjustment, step by step

Copy-ready dispute notes

The 3PL angle: disputing charges passed through to brands

For a 3PL, a dimensional weight adjustment is two disputes, not one. The carrier bills the 3PL's account, and the 3PL usually passes the correction to the brand under a pass-through clause in the contract. The brand then asks why it is paying for a bigger box than the product needs, and the 3PL needs an answer for that exact carton.

Without per-carton evidence, both conversations stall. The 3PL cannot tell which corrections to fight before the carrier's window closes, and the brand cannot tell whether a correction reflects its product, the 3PL's carton choice or a carrier error. A record per carton turns that into a routine: dispute what the record contradicts, pass through what it confirms, and send the brand the record instead of a spreadsheet line.

If you are writing or renewing that contract, specify the evidence standard for pass-through charges and the timing that keeps you inside the carrier's window. See the 3PL contract evidence clause and the wider 3PL evidence playbook. For the warehouse side of the same routine, read warehouse packing video proof.

How PallasMark handles dimensional weight evidence

PallasMark makes the tape-and-scale photo a step in the packing record, on the phones your team already carries, so every parcel has its own evidence before the label prints.

What the seller's side actually looks like

Capture on the phone that is already in the room, and a sealed record the other side can open and check without an account.

The green verified result appears only after the stored file is re-hashed and compared with this recorded fingerprint.

This is the page you send. A buyer, a bank or a carrier opens it with no account and checks the file themselves.
  • Bound to the order or carton before the first frame. The packer scans the barcode on the picking slip or label and the app opens that order. For B2B and 3PL work, warehouse records for packing, loading and dispatch are tied to a shipment, pallet or lot reference, a facility and a client brand, with custom fields such as carton ID or PO.
  • The tape and the scale display stay in the frame. PallasMark records the photo or video; it does not read or store the weight as data. What it keeps is the image of the tape on each side and the scale display, stamped with the company name, order number and upload time (UTC) inside the photo.
  • Sealed against later edits. Each file gets a SHA-256 fingerprint and a public verification page that re-checks it on the spot, so a carrier billing team or a brand can confirm the photo has not changed since the parcel left. See tamper-proof video.
  • Found in seconds when the invoice arrives. Search and filter records by facility, client, date, creator and custom fields, so a weekly reconciliation can match every correction to its carton.
  • Shared with one brand, one record at a time. Send the brand a link to that carton's record with an expiry date, an optional PIN and download settings, revocable at any time. They see that record and nothing else in your warehouse.
  • Location on every record. Each record shows whether it was made inside the facility area, outside it, or not checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I dispute a UPS shipping charge correction?

Request an invoice adjustment through UPS billing within 180 days of receiving the contested invoice, which is the window in UPS's Tariff and Terms of Service; after that the dispute is waived. Give the tracking number, the dimensions and weight you entered, and photos taken before the label printed showing the tape measure on each side and the parcel on the scale. Corrections are easiest to reverse when your evidence shows smaller dimensions than the audit.

What is the dimensional weight divisor for UPS and FedEx?

FedEx divides length times width times height in inches by 139. UPS uses 139 for daily rates and 166 for retail rates. Both round each dimension up to the next whole inch, and the billable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight.

How long do I have to dispute a FedEx reweigh or dimension adjustment?

FedEx's 2026 Service Guide says requests for invoice adjustment due to an overcharge must be received within 180 days after the original invoice date for US shipments, and within 60 days for international shipments. Billing based on an incorrect package weight is part of FedEx's own definition of an overcharge.

What changes for FedEx surcharges in 2027?

FedEx list rates rise an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027, and surcharges change the same day. FedEx's 2027 table raises the Additional Handling Surcharge for dimensions to between $31.75 and $43.75 per package depending on zone, and the Oversize Charge to between $270 and $355. Check FedEx's rate-change page for your zone and service.

Can the carrier still adjust charges if my measurements were right?

Yes, in some cases. Both UPS and FedEx say package dimensions can change in transit, and both reserve the right to adjust charges when they do. A record showing a firm, square, properly sealed box at dispatch is your best answer, because a box that bulged from overfilling or weak packaging is still treated as the shipper's responsibility.

Does PallasMark weigh or measure the parcel?

No. PallasMark records photos and video tied to the order or carton, with the tape measure and the scale display visible in the frame. The weight and dimensions you enter still go into your shipping software, and the sealed record is what you show the carrier or a brand client when a correction is questioned.

Can PallasMark read the label on a carton automatically?

When a scanned code matches no order, the app can read the package label instead. On the Scale plan, AI label reading takes a photo of a package label and fills supplier, lot, quantity, location, condition and any custom fields you define into a form the operator reviews before saving. A scanned barcode always takes priority over the AI reading.
